In August 1996, President Clinton signed new Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations that will make smoking history. They will get rid of cigarette vending machines and also destroy Joe Camel and other pictures in cigarette ads. The cigarette companies want to stop this progress. We hope that anyone who feels strongly about the FDA regulations will SPEAK OUT, otherwise the cigarette companies will continue to beat us as they have many times before when we have tried to get local and state legislation passed.

Here are some major parts of Clinton's plan:

Ban cigarette vending machines in most places except night clubs and bars.
Require IDs for age verification.
Forbid free samples and the sale of single cigarettes.
Ban billboards within 1,000 feet of schools and playgrounds.
Allow only black-and-white text ads - NO PICTURES - in publications with more than 15% youth readership or 2,000,000 youth readers, outdoor advertising (including bus and billboard ads).
Prohibit sale or give-away products like caps, T-shirst and gym bags that carry brand names or logos.
Prohibit brand name sponsorship of sporting or entertainment events.

Now the FDA regulation is under attack. Some Members of Congress, who are sucked in by the tobacco companies' money, are constantly battling to stop this proposal. We want EVERYONE to write the U.S. Representative and Senators telling them they are in favor of making it harder for kids to buy cigarettes and to get rid of all the cartoon characters and other ads that make tobacco attractive. Every letter could save countless lives.
